Victory Amidst Carnage in Final Race

Race Report

In the final race of the season, heated battles for position escalate into open combat, and old grudges find expression in weaponfire as the race devolves into a bloodfest claiming more ships than any previous race in League history.  When the smoke clears, Venture finds itself with two first places and a podium place in all classes.

If anyone had hoped that the final race of Season Five might be a little less violent than the rest of the season had been, they were sorely disappointed, for within five minutes of pilots arriving at the first waypoint, nine ships had been destroyed. In the end, twenty-one craft were destroyed, twenty of them by other racers – more racer-induced casualties than in all the other races of the League combined.

Already having the interceptor championship secured, Venture owner and interceptor ace Takashi Kurosawa switched to an assault frigate to aid the team in its quest to teach Vorpal Bunny Racing a lesson about messing with Venture. Though rarely thought of as an aggressive man, Kurosawa proved a very talented combat pilot, easily turning from racing ace to combat ace with five kills during the race. Joining him were VRT assault frigate pilot DeVinces and regular VRT escort Thulla Icin.

The trio easily destroyed both pilots from VBR at the first waypoint. During the confusion of their combat and a three-way battle between the Dragonstar/Scuderia Caille, Frontal Impact, and Dirtside teams, two non-aligned racers jumped into the fray as well, with one making the mistake of attacking the VRT team, and quickly being dispatched.

The Venture combat group would show their strength again as they denied a VBR pilot the ability to reach the first waypoint on their second attempt, and then raced to join the rest of the team, as VBR’s captain had been sighted attempting to attack VRT pilots farther along the track. Most of the Venture racers were able to evade him long enough for the combat pilots to arrive and dispatch him, unfortunately, he did manage to catch interceptor pilot Felicia DeWinter and destroy her ship only seconds before help arrived. Between combats, the VRT escorts were also able to salvage some of the more expensive modules from the wrecked ships of other racers and return them to their rightful owners.

Combat was not the only area the Venture team was successful in, however, as they won first place in both frigates and assault frigates, while placing third in interceptors.

The frigate class was largely free of the combat epidemic in the interceptor and assault frigate classes, and VRT Captain Killjoy Tseng was able to win handily even without support of Venture’s legendary interceptors, as Elsebeth Rhiannon had interface issues that caused her to slip far behind – though with several of her top competitors losing their ships, even technical issues were unable to keep her off the podium. In assault frigates, VRT’s regular comms co-ordinator, Reshessa, took to the track for the first time, and finished, much to her surprise, at the top of her class.

Though it was more violent than hoped for, the last race was indeed a return to glory for Venture, and a spectacular ending for a season that has seen both amazing success and astounding heartache. From the wild successes in the first races of the season, to the death of Venture founder Kendar Zek, from the intense and exhilarating competition from new and old names alike, to the pointless attacks by bitter rivals, from having ships destroyed to destroying ships, this season has been an intense ride of emotions not soon to be forgotten. And in the final race, victory is proven.

Victory is bittersweet.
